Sync through own storage

Added · Seed

… the actor keeps their work in an artifact on their own device under local-first ownership, works on it alone, and wants it on every device they use, or kept safe off the device, through identity at the point of need. They already have storage that follows them, such as iCloud, Dropbox or another service, and it is one of the tools they already work with.

Problem

A person who wants their work on every device is usually offered the artifact’s own sync, which needs an account and keeps the work on the provider’s server. Many people already pay for storage that follows them across devices, and the artifact could use it instead.

Solution

Keep the work as files the actor’s own storage can carry, and let the actor choose where they live. Say which storage works on which platform.

Continuation

The work reaches the actor's other devices through storage they already hold, and the artifact keeps no identity of its own for them…
